Date: 11 February 2004

The Prime Minister
The Right Honourable, Mr Tony Blair
10 Downing Street
London SW1

Dear Sir,

This is to bring to your attention the plight of the Iranian people, who have been taken hostage by the Islamic Republic of Iran. We are appealing to you today to seek your assistance to simply acknowledge their plight and to support them with their peaceful people’s movement and the establishment of a true referendum under the auspices of the international community.

The Islamic Republic of Iran continues to terrorize the Iranian people and has taken away their rights to freedom of thought, belief, and expression.

Sir, you have felt the isolation of being misrepresented by the media. We expect you to understand how we feel when the media fails to acknowledge the criminal acts of the Iranian government such as the torture and imprisonment of political prisoners. The media goes on wrongly to present the image of the mullahs as a true reflection of Iranian culture and the Iranian people.

Further, you are earnestly requested to consider the sense of frustration whilst your government representatives suggest to the world that the Islamic Republic of Iran is an emerging democracy that has some human rights issues. It is proved and documented that the Islamic Republic of Iran’s ideology is based on terrorism that fails to adhere to any standard of human rights.

Our understanding of standards for an emerging democracy is the movement towards the voice of the people, a fair election, an accountable and transparent government and a system with checks and balances. The Islamic Republic of Iran will not move towards any of these concepts because it would not survive if any of them were put in place.

Our ultimate goal is to achieve a truly civilised and democratic Iran. In our opinion, relying on the false promises of the mullahs, that cause human misery, is not worth the benefits you receive from trading with them. We earnestly request you to take a wise long-term policy with this goal in mind.

Sir, you express grave concern of the possibility of a terrorist attack on British soil. We hope that, you empathise with Iranians feeling of living under constant terror when expressing their views and when standing up for their rights. We earnestly request you to stop the support of the Islamic Republic of Iran, which is a major contributor to the world terrorism that you wish to eradicate.

Sir, you often expressed your eagerness to gain and maintain the trust of the public. Please pay attention to Iranians quandary in facing hypocrisy and the Machiavellian attitude towards Iran reflected in the world media.

Sir, Iranians do not need foreign intervention or military conflict to take a stand against the repressive Islamic Republic of Iran. We request you to simply acknowledge our plight and to support us with our peaceful movement and the establishment of a true referendum under the auspices of the international community. However, a referendum staged by the mullahs will not do. The Iranian people have so far been deceived and have paid a heavy price for this treachery but they are now more aware than at any other time.

So, please support the democratic process in Iran and cease all trades with the Islamic Republic of Iran.

Yours sincerely,

Ms. Haideh Tavackoli

Foreign Relations Committee
