President Obama
The White House
1600 Pennsylvania Avenue NW
Washington, DC 20500

Dear President Obama,

I urge you to revisit our history and remember Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s teachings and the struggles of Blacks in America for freedom and democracy. People of Iran are seeking the same rights. It is ironic to see you and your administration are standing by on the sidelines and watching people of Iran being massacred on the streets of Iran.

Mr. President, United States has been the beacon of democracy and staunch promoter of freedom, liberty and justice for all, through out her existence. Please continue this honorable tradition and do not allow another Tiananmen Square massacre to take place during your presidency.

During these crucial times, people of Iran need the International support. European countries are doing their part and United States as the leader of the free world should do its part. Take back your Fourth of July invitation from these thugs. Fourth of July, represent the birth of a nation which was founded on the pillars of human rights, freedom, liberty and justice for all. Those who take part in such celebration should understand and believe in these rights and values. Having representatives of Iranian government in our embassies and consulates around the globe, part taking in 4th of July celebration is contrary to the fabric of our principles and disrespectful to our founding fathers. What kind of a message would we be sending to those who are dying on the streets of Iran fighting for the same principles? Are we telling Neda that her death was in vain?

The actions of the Iranian government in the past three decade and specially in the past 2 weeks, has proven the fact that, it is a terrorist government which thrives on creating and promoting terror not only on the world arena, but also inside its own borders. Ruling with an iron fist and killing its own citizens proves that they are an occupying force and not a legitimate government. A government that has no respect for basic human rights and human life.

We should stand by the people of Iran and show our support in their struggle to get their God given rights back. Iranians are the same people whom in defiance to their government’s orders, took to the streets of Iran on September 11, 2001 and held the largest candle light vigil, risking their lives, to show their support for United States and condemn such cowardly terrorist act. While their government chanted “death to America” during the Friday prayers.

Mr. President, it is understood that your policy has been one of engagement, even with our enemies. You made this point very clear during your presidential campaign, which is the most effective policy. However, at this time the rules of engagement have changed. I cannot see how one can engage such a government who does not hesitate to kill its own citizens in broad day light and has no respect for human life.

Mr. President, at this point being a spectator is not to our advantage, waiting to see which side is going to win, will brand us as opportunists. Siding with the winner, has been our policy during the past few decades in the region and has disengaged the people of this region, especially Iranians. This kind of policy has had short-term gain and long-term losses for United States in this part of the world. As mentioned in your speech in Cairo, you are the defender of freedom and democracy, now you need to act upon this promise. Change this old policy of short term gains in lieu of long term interest, lets engage and support the people of Iran and not the government of Iran.
Make no mistake Mr. President, at the end, people of Iran will triumph and win, as blacks did in America. Isn’t that why, you are in the office today?

Let’s change our antiquated policies, put our long-term interest ahead of our short-term gains, and invest in the people of Iran and not the government of Iran. History has shown that governments and regimes do change in Iran, but people of Iran do not forget who has been their friend and who has been their foe.
Thanks.

Very Truly Yours,

Hossein Khorram
